Bitcoin’s price is extremely volatile. It ended the last seven days a full 20 per cent above the week’s low point. Such dramatic moves within short periods are not unusual and make it much more volatile than share investments – Bitcoin’s 20 per cent move compares to moves closer to 1 per cent for the New Zealand and US share markets.

Regardless of the volatility, some financial institutions and corporates like JP Morgan, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley and Tesla are taking Bitcoin seriously, leading investors to ponder whether Bitcoin is the currency and investment of the future. But we should also be pondering whether energy demands from Bitcoin mining are positive for our planet’s future.

ANDY SERWER: And that concludes the 2021 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting to shareholders. But stick around, there is a lot to talk about, a lot to go through with our panel here at Yahoo Finance. Of course, Buffett and Munger talking about all manner of subjects concerning Berkshire, how the company performed, the economy, railroads, tech stocks, Bitcoin, the whole gamut.

And the atmosphere here in the room, you guys, different from last year when there was absolutely no one in the cavernous CHI Center in Omaha. There are directors, you can hear them behind me talking right now. A good number of them turned out. So there was some reaction in response to the zingers that Buffett and particularly, Charlie Munger, delivered to the cr ... Read more »

The sale left Ruffer with about $700million invested, or around 3 per cent of its total assets.

A source close to the £22.2billion asset manager said it had reduced its investment to less than 0.5 per cent of its total, representing no more than £110million.

It is understood that Ruffer started to sell out of Bitcoin after Tesla – the electric car company founded by Musk – announced a $1.5billion purchase of Bitcoin in February and said it would start accepting the cryptocurrency as a payment method.

The source described this as a 'sign of a bubble'.

In January, Musk – who has more than 52million followers on Twitter – changed his Twitter pro ... Read more »

Purchases of Bitcoin by central banks and sovereign funds are inevitable as the adoption of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, according to Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss.

More companies are also likely to hold Bitcoin on their balance sheet for treasury purposes, as it serves as a better hedge against inflation than gold, Mr Winklevoss, a cryptocurrencies afficionado, told a webinar organised last week by the AIM Summit and digital asset manager 3iQ.

"At some point a central bank will have Bitcoin on its balance sheet. That just will happen," Mr Winklevoss said.

"Because central banks have gold on their balance sheet. And Bitcoin is Gold 2.0," he argued.

Bitcoin’s meteoric rise has won over many of the cryptocurrency’s former critics. When it comes to Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and his right-hand man, Charlie Munger, that’s definitely not the case.

Munger said that he hated the Bitcoin success during Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting that took place on May 1. He added that “the whole development” is disgusting and runs counter to the interests of the civilization:

Of course, I hate the Bitcoin success. I should say modestly that I think the whole damn development is disgusting and contrary to the interests of civilization, and I’ll leave the criticism to others.

While “the Oracle of Omaha” dodged a question about Bitcoin, he agreed with Munger’s scathing statement:
